Hey parents, we apologize for the late notice, but we wanted to inform you of the subject matter of tomorrow’s Sunday School lesson at New Providence. In our current series we are talking about how God calls us to be “Distinct” in our character, influence, reactions, and this week… relationships!
When you look through scripture, it isn’t difficult to see that God has some strong cautions and commands when it comes to this area, especially when dealing with PURITY. Our main scripture this week comes from Matthew 5:27-32 where it says…
“You have heard it said, do not commit adultery. But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”
Woah….adultery, lust, gouging, hell… talk about a loaded passage! I’m sure those words make some of you uncomfortable (especially thinking about your middle schooler!), and we agree! They are uncomfortable terms, and talking about SEX can be a difficult conversation, but it is one we are willing to have. Our culture is talking about it, TV shows are centered around it, movies feature it, songs talk about it, M&M commercials exploit it, and you can bet the kids that they go to school with are being exposed to the same things.
Our goal for tomorrow is NOT to focus on sex, or adultery, or even pornography. Our goal is to talk about PURITY! Purity in our thoughts, in our actions, and in our relationships. God calls us to live PURE lives just like Jesus did, and to rid ourselves of anything that gets in the way. We hope to have a clear, honest conversation about that with your kids tomorrow, and for them to leave with a clear picture of what God wants for us.
As always, any parents are welcome to sit in on our Sunday School classes if you would like to observe or know more. Class begins at 9:00am meeting in the BRISK Cafe at Eastside.
